Abstract

This paper takes an in depth look at the relationship between the assessment process and case formulation in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) but not without explaining the context of CBT in the current psychotherapeutic environment. The principle aims of the assessment process is to agree with the client on a list of problems, to further agree on a formulation of these target problems and to have developed sufficiently detailed information about the contributing factors in maintaining these presenting problems (Persons, 1989). The case example used in the paper is not imagined or borrowed from other academic papers. A good diagram-illustration (Figure 1) is given on Cognitive Formulation for Depression and Perfectionism.

The paper also describes different interventions for a successful assessment and case formulation process, reviewing the relevant literature. The implications of the assessment and formulation for the therapeutic process are discussed.
