Immigrant Families: A Family Cognitive Behavioural Model of Parenting

Abstract

This academic article aims to make a clinical and social case by helping the reader understand the child rearing challenges faced by immigrants and their children in their communities. The article presents a family cognitive behavioural view to help an understanding of the struggles and support needs of immigrant parents and the children. This model takes into account reports of high numbers of children taken into care and high-frequency of abusive and neglectful parental and children behaviours, mental health and social problems in immigrant families. Emphasis is given to the role of the parents’ own upbringing in the development of their perceptions of how to parent their own children.
